Galvanize: Song Became Personal Anthem

Sometimes a song just hits you and it becomes “your song”. Maybe you heard it at a key time in life, maybe someone you respect was the first person to play it for you or maybe it’s sung by your favorite artist.

“My song” is Galvanize and out of the song sprung a bunch of ideas and even a roller derby name when I was skating in 2008. But skating or not, it was the sentiment or the vibe that had me clinging to the song Galvanize for inspiration. It helped a lot that the vocalist on the track is Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest fame.

The lyrics came at a much needed time in life. I was in a downward spiral, feeling as though no matter what I did or how hard I tried everyone one around me was critical and nothing was working out right. I wanted to give up but instead I decided to galvanize.

Not caring what others thought was just the type of freedom I needed and for a few years I took it to the hilt. It began with joining roller derby. Something I knew my female relatives and friends would probably scoff at or judge but that I thought would be a great way to get exercise, release tension and especially release the “me” that was in a cage of convention.

It only made sense that my roller derby name should be GAL-VanIZed because then every time I heard or said the name, I also heard the song itself. If someone disagreed or gave me a “crooked stare” my mind was thinking, “don’t hold back.” I did a lot of courageous things in my life while in that mood.

The day that I declared “Galvanize is my theme song”, I had no idea what an impact it would have on me and on my relationships with others. However, I do know that there are plenty of people who have a song that spurs them to action. Some people have a song that changed their entire life and I want to hear about it and publish it on this blog. Please leave a message in the comments if you have a song that changed your life or a story to tell that is tied in with a song.

Galvanize Lyrics

Don’t hold back
Cause you woke up in the mornin’, with initiative to move, so I make it harder
Don’t hold back
If you think about it, so many people do, be cool man, look smarter.
Don’t hold back
And you shouldn’t even care, bout those noses in the air, and their crooked stares
Don’t hold back
Cause there’s a party over here, so you might as well be here, where the people care
Don’t hold back

The world, they’re holdin’ back
The time has come to
The world, they’re holdin’ back
The time has come to
The world, they’re holdin’ back
The time has come to
Galvanize!

C’mon, c’mon c’mon.

Don’t hold back
If you think about it too much, you may stumble, trip up, fall on your face
Don’t hold back
You think its time you get up, crunch time, like a sit up, come on keep pace
Don’t hold back
Put apprehension on the back burner, let it sit, don’t even get it lit
Don’t hold back
Get involved with the jam, don’t be a prick, hot chick, be a dick.
Don’t hold back

The world, they’re holdin’ back
The time has come to
The world, they’re holdin’ back
The time has come to
The world, they’re holdin’ back
The time has come to
Galvanize!

C’mon, c’mon c’mon.

World, the time has come to
Push the button
World, the time has come to
Push the button
World, the time has come to
Push the button
World, my finger, is on the button
My finger, is on the button
My finger, is on the button
Push the button
The time has come to
Galvanize
